Dibels Terminology: Here is the terminology for the Dibels Printout each of you received. FSF stands for first sound fluency. LNF stands for letter name fluency. Class Party: We'll be doing a class party this Thursday during our Social Studies time because both classes have filled up their marble jars. The students can bring one snack to eat during the party and may choose to bring one of the following: a blanket, a stuffed animal, or a pillow. They may also bring a book from home to look at during a portion of our party.

Poem: We have a new poem for the month of March. We will pass this off around the 26th of March. Please review it with your child at home.

I want to catch a leprechaun.  Maybe I’ll set a trap.  I wonder where they like to hide?  I wish I had a map!  I hope I find a leprechaun.  Will he fit in my hand?  I’ve heard they like gold and clovers, and come from Ireland.

That's all I have for you today. Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Weekly Email Update 2/20/18

Hi Kindergarten Parents,

Welcome back from the long weekend. Here are the updates for the upcoming week:

Spelling Words: These were sent home last Friday and will continue to be sent home the Friday before the test from now on. 1. shed 2. chin 3. thick 4. when 5. shin 6. then 7. chug 8. we Sentence: Chip has a bad shin.

Sight Word Assessments: My aids will begin the sight word assessments for the first half of our words this week. Please review with the kids at home.

the, a, and, my, as, I, are, to, by, was, he, is, his, has, for, be.

Spelling Test Scoring: As you have probably noticed on the kids' tests, the sentence is worth quite a few points, so please continue to work with them at home. I've started giving points for each sound, space, period, capital, etc. If a child writes their letter backwards or uppercase when they're not supposed to, they will lose half a point. Hopefully that clarifies some of the confusion on the scoring.

Parent Teacher Conferences: Conferences will be next week. Please refer to the email sent out by Shannon at the front office from last week to sign up. I look forward to meeting with you and answering your questions!

Book Orders: Our book orders will be submitted on February 23rd. To place a new order go to: scholastic.com/newparent. Be sure to enter our class code: RBFW6

Dr. Seuss Week: Our Social Studies unit for next week is Dr. Seuss. A note will be sent home this week with more information. Please keep an eye out for this note in your student's folders.

Thanks for all the support. Have a great evening!

Sincerely,

Tiana McEwen

Weekly Email Update 2/5/18

Hi Kindergarten Parents,

I hope you've had a nice Monday! Here are the updates for the week.

Spelling Words: Our digraph focus this week is /th/. Yy, Zz, this, bath, that, thin, math, them  Trick Word: he  Sentence: He has a pet moth. (Please work with your child on starting with a capital, ending with a period, and adding spaces between the words.) Thank you!

100 Day Reminder: Tomorrow is the day we'll be celebrating our hundredth day of school! It should be a really fun day for the kids! As a reminder, the kids can bring 100 of something to show the class. This is not something that will be shared with the kids, but your child should be able to hold it in their hands and briefly tell the class about it. Examples include: 100 smarties, 100 pretzels, 100 paperclips, etc.

Poem: Our February Poem pass-off day will be Tuesday, February 27th. Our new poem for the month is:

"I gave a hundred Valentines. A hundred did I say?

I gave a thousand Valentines one cold and wintry day.

I didn't put my name on them or any other words,

because my Valentines were tiny seeds for the February birds."

Newsletter: Our February newsletter was sent home last Thursday with some additional information about the 100th day and Valentines party on the back. I've attached the newsletter to this email. You can also access it on my website here.

Valentines Party Reminder: Our party is next Wednesday, February 14th. Thanks to everyone that's volunteered to help and contribute. We still need one more volunteer for the game station if anyone in the AM would like to sign up for that at this link.  As a reminder, the kids can bring valentines and a valentine box this day. We ask that the valentines are not labeled, so that the kids can quickly pass them out during our party.

That's everything for this week. Thanks for your continued support. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Tiana McEwen

Valentines Party: Our Valentines Party is coming up on Wednesday, February 14th. As a reminder, the kids may bring Valentines to share with everyone in the class if they'd like. There are 22 kids in the PM class and 25 kids in the AM class. The children may also bring a box or bag to store their Valentines in for the day. If anyone is interested in signing up for the parties, please click the links below. We still haven't had any volunteers for our PM class, so any help we can get, would be appreciated. Even if you'd just like to donate materials, but can't make it to help in person, we appreciate your efforts and involvement.

"On Monday January 29, we will be hosting our first annual STEAM night from 5:30-7:30 at the Junior High campus. This night will feature student projects from Kindergarten to 8th grade in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. We will also have many hands on activities that you can participate in that include building catapults, snowflake sculptures, coding with OSMO’s, creating and inventing with circuits, as well as many other fun activities.  We will have a representative from the aviation program at Utah State University bringing a small flight simulator for students to use.  Also, Draper City Police Department will be showing students how to use field investigation tools.  Our amazing student council will also be selling concessions."

Weekly Update 1/22/18

Hi Kindergarten Parents,

Here is your weekly update.

Science Fair: Our Science Fair is this week and it's already been so fun to watch the students and see their experiments. We still have about 5 students per class that have not signed up. Please do so by clicking the following links. If you're not able to sign up online, please feel free to text me and I can sign you up.

AM Science Fair Sign-Up

PM Science Fair Sign-Up

Spelling Words: We've introduced the concept of the digraph /sh/ this week, so it's super important to practice with the kids at home if possible.

Letter Review: Uu, Vv

Words: ship, shop, rush, dash, shut, wish

Trick Word: she

Sentence: She is a fish.

(Please make sure your child practices starting with a capital letter, ending with a period, and putting spaces between the words.)

Fundations Unit 4: We started a new unit in our Fundations program this week. I will be sending home a new practice packet that aligns with what we're learning in class sometime this week.

Book Orders: Book orders are due this Friday, January 26th. Please remember to place your order onilne using our class code RBFW6 if you're interested. There are some super cheap and cute books on there.

Book Fair: We will be having a book fair on our Steam Night, January 28th from 5:30-7:30.

Writing Contest: Our students have been invited to participate in the school-wide writing contest with the theme of: "If I knew I could not fail, I would..." Students can write a poem, short story, etc. There are prizes for the winner!  These are due before our Steam Night next Monday.

Reading Contest: Our reading contest ends this Friday and we're still really short of our goal of reading 11,000 minutes over the three week period. This averages out to about 10 minutes per student for 5 days a week. If you read more than 10 minutes a day with your child, that's great and will count towards our goal. The first week we read about 2425 minutes as a Kindergarten. Our goal each week is 3666. If you need a copy of the tracking sheet, please let me know and I'm happy to send you one. Thanks for supporting your child!

Spirit Night: Our spirit night is tonight at Chick-Fil-A from 5:00-7:00. Hope you can make it!

That's all I have for you this week! We're onto our last half of the year and many of the kids are progressing so well. I'm looking forward to meeting with each of you during our Parent Teacher Conferences next month to discuss your child's progress. If you ever have questions about how they are doing, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Also, please continue to read and work with them at home. I can tell  from personal experience, it makes a HUGE difference. Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Tiana McEwen
